National Child Protection Week
This week, we celebrate National Child Protection Week with the theme for this year, Every Conversation Matters. A lovely aspect of Cathedral school is the presence of many parents and parental figures around our school (parents, carers, grandparents, aunts, uncles). Each day we witness parents conversing with their children and at a time when some suggest that the art of conversation has died, we see it alive and well in the interactions of our students and their families. So this week we acknowledge that our time is spent wisely conversing with our children and by listening to them and them knowing that they can come to us, we are not only demonstrating that we care for them but we are adding an extra layer of safety as we model and use respectful relationships.
Below is an excerpt from the NAPCAN Website.
PARENTS PLAY THEIR PART TO PROTECT AND CARE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE IN THEIR COMMUNITY BY SHOWING HOW TO HAVE RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS.
- Being a parent can be challenging. Accept offers of help (especially the ones where cooked meals are involved!)
- Link in with services that support you – New Parent Groups and Playgroups can be fantastic.
- Parenting isn’t always easy. Share your experiences and skills with other parents – it can help you realise that you are not alone!
- It’s ok to reach out and ask for support, from family, friends, services, health professionals and so on.
- Discover what helps reduce your stress and assists you to best care for your children. Listen to your children and involve them in planning things as a family.
- Play with your children. It can be as simple as a game of “peek-a-boo” or reading to them. Playing with children helps build a positive relationship and connection and most of all it is fun!
- Take time out when you feel stressed or upset – look after yourself. Parenting can be positive – notice the good times too.
Make plans for enjoyable “family time” – this can help build close relationships. - Talk about safety with your children. Talk about what being unsafe might look and feel like at home, in their community, online or at school. Make plans about what to do if they feel unsafe.
- Parenting courses can help you be the best you can be.
- Celebrate your children, their achievements, values and interests and support them when times are tough. This will build a strong family that is loving and safe.
- Get involved in your community. Joining groups such as for sporting activities will help you and your children to have fun and meet people.

Christmas Art Storytelling Competition
Congratulations to the ten students who were announced as our school representatives for the Christmas Art Storytelling Competition. Their artworks will feature in the Diocesan Exhibition & Launch this Friday at 11:00am, proudly hosted in the Cathedral School Hall. Compass notifications were sent last week to our representatives and their families.
Our Captains and Vice Captains will also support the event from a hospitality perspective. A reminder that all above students need to wear their full winter uniform as part of their attendance at the Exhibition and Awards Ceremony.

Families are invited to enjoy a cuppa from 8:30am in the hall before the commencement of the assembly.

Library
I had a wonderful time accompanying Year 3 on their excursion to the Bathurst City Library last week. The amazing staff at the Library told us about all the books, games, DVDs and other services we can access at the Library like Lego club on a Thursday afternoon. The children listened to stories, did a craft/writing activity and even got to go on a scavenger hunt! I encourage you to join the Library and take your children to visit this wonderful facility.

Class In Focus - 5C
This term, Year 5C have been learning about 3D shapes in Mathematics- We had lots of fun exploring 3D shapes by building different shapes with blocks and then classifying their properties- prisms, pyramids, cones, cylinders and spheres.
In Science, Year 5 enjoyed the sunshine this week with the early Spring weather. We made use of the sun shining to go outside for our Science lesson. Each student chose an animal toy. Then with paper and a pencil, we went outside in the sun to draw shadow figures. This demonstrated how shadows work-when an object blocks the sun it casts a shadow. 5C learnt that the position of the sun throughout the day will determine the length of the shadow, whether it casts a long or short shadow.
And of course 5C, there’s always time for a brain break to do a Just dance!
We are all looking forward to our Christian Living Camp in a few weeks.
